The art of zellige
Passed down across generations from Tangier, zellige is an ancestral craft that demands patience, precision, and a sharp eye for colour.
The five steps of making
- 01
The clay
Local red clay, dried then kneaded by hand to a homogeneous, plastic paste.
- 02
Glazing
Each tile receives a glaze made from mineral pigments. Colour is born from firing — every kiln is a promise.
- 03
Firing
Wood-fired kiln above 900°C. The surface imperfections are the mark of fire and the signature of the artisan.
- 04
Cutting
With hammer and anvil, the artisan cuts each tessera to the requested format — square, hexagon, fan, lozenge.
- 05
Delivery
Colour sorting, quality control, palletising. Your zellige leaves the workshop to join your project.
